Hire a UI and UX designer
UX is about whether people can do what they came to do. UI is about what it looks like while they do it. Most projects need some of both.
Hiring for UI and UX is different from hiring for a website build, because the deliverable is often not a finished site. Being precise about what you get is what stops these projects drifting.
Typical deliverables
- An audit — where people get stuck now, with specific recommendations.
- Wireframes — structure and flow before any visual design.
- A design system — components, spacing and type so future screens stay consistent.
- Finished screens — ready for a developer to build.
Agree in writing which of these you are buying, in what format, and whether building it is included. That single clause prevents most disputes on UX projects.
What good UX work looks like
It starts with what people are trying to do, not with what the screen should look like. A designer who opens by asking about your customers and where enquiries currently drop off is doing the job. One who opens with colour palettes is doing something else.
It should also be measurable. "Reduce the number of people abandoning the enquiry form" is a goal. "Make it more modern" is not.
Common questions
01Do I need UX for a small business site?
Rarely as a separate exercise. For a five-page site, good structure and clear copy do the job. UX as a discipline earns its cost when there is a real flow — a booking, a checkout, an application — where people drop out.
02What is the difference between UI and UX?
UX is how it works and whether people can complete their task. UI is how it looks and how controls behave. They overlap, and on small projects one person does both.
03Will I get files I can build from?
Only if you agree that in writing. Ask specifically what format the handover is in and whether a developer could build from it without further design work.
