They look similar and work quite differently. The distinction matters most when something goes wrong.

Upwork is closer to recruitment: you describe a job and assess candidates. Fiverr is closer to retail: you buy a described package. Neither is better in the abstract.
What to watch on either platform
- The base package is rarely the real price. On Fiverr especially, responsive design, source files and extra revisions are often paid add-ons. Read the tiers before comparing.
- Reviews reflect delivery, not durability. A five-star review is left days after handover, before anyone knows whether the site holds up in six months.
- Communication is the real filter. Send the same question to three sellers. The quality of the replies tells you more than any rating.
- Keep it on the platform. Both offer dispute resolution that only works if the money went through them.
- Ownership still applies. Register your own domain and hosting before you commission anything. See who owns your website.
Marketplaces are efficient at finding people and poor at guaranteeing outcomes. That is the trade. Do the vetting yourself and both platforms can work well.

03What about payment protection?
